What is HSG?

HSG is the short form of Hystero-salpingo-graphy. Hystero has to do with the uterus (womb), -salpingx has to do with the fallopian tubes, while -graphy has to do with diagram or picture. In essence, HSG is a radiological procedure used to obtain the true image of  the uterus and the fallopian tubes using a dye, for the propose of ascertaing tubal patency or throughness of the fallopian tubes and the shape, size and outlines of the uterus. In general, the main purpose of HSG is to find out if your inability to conceive is as a result of fallopian tube blockage.

Who does the procedure?
A radiologist and/or a radiographer may carry out the procedure on you in the x-ray department in your hospital or an independent diagnostic outfit.

Why do I need HSG?
You may need to undergo HSG for any of the following reasons:
1. Verification of fallopian tube blockage
2. Suspected abnormalities in your uterus,
3. Suspected tumor in your uterus e.g fibroid
4. Abnormal vaginal bleeding
5. If you had recently had a surgery on your tubes
6. To evaluate a Caesarean section scar on your uterus
7. Consistent miscarriages

What conditions may disqualify me for the procedure?
There are a few conditions that may disqualify you for HSG investigation. They are as follows:
1. PID - Pelvic inflammatory disease aka toilet disease or infection
2. Positive pregnancy test
3. Contrast agent intolerance- Some persons react adversely to the dye that must be used for the procedure.
4. Your failure to give consent for the investigation: if you do not accept to undergo the procedure, no mortal will attempt forcing it down your throat.

How do I prepare for HSG?
As soon as you consent to undergo the procedure, then you are ready for it. There is a rule that is strictly followed in preparing patients for HSG. It is called the 10-day rule.
