Lower abdominal pain (LAP) is one of the major reasons so many women report to the hospital. The causes of lower abdominal pain could vary from very simple to complex and sometimes, very serious cases. Many times, after careful clinical and laboratory investigations, these are some causes of LAP that are not related with pregnancy:

1. Functional ovarian cyst.
Ovarian cysts are small oval-shaped bags of fluid in your ovaries. They are a result of a failed or unsuccessful ovulation. This cyst was an egg that started forming in one of your ovaries from the first day of your cycle which failed to rupture for ovulation to take place on that particular month. If you have been diagnosed of an ovarian cyst, please take it easy, it's a very simple case: in a couple of weeks you will get over it. However, there are other kinds of cyst that may not easily resolve. Such may include dermoid cyst, endometrioma, etc. These are also non cancerous cysts, and may be removed surgically.

2. Fibroids.
Fibroid pain may be so mild and insignificant when they are yet smaller in size. Sometimes, fibroids of various sizes may exist without you having any pain or any of it's symptoms. However, it's pain could be quite serious and sometimes, discomforting. Aside pains, fibroid could make you lose more blood during your monthly cycle. It also has the ability of prolonging your days of flow and also cause intermenstrual bleeding. This is not a palatable experience.

Note: I would advise every young lady of reproductive age, from the age of 18 to go for a pelvic scan annually and know at least a little of your health status long before you say "I do"

to Mr Right. Yes, it's important.

3. Toilet disease (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease-PID)
This is commonly called toilet disease or infection. But it is actually a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is not your toilet that caused it, please do not tell a lie against your innocent toilet! Rather, bacterias such as Kleb, E-Coli, Staph and others contracted during sexual intercourse with an infected person or unhygienic lifestyle may be responsible. Fungal infections (which is an  opportunistic infections) may also be responsible. Candida (though a normal floura fungi) is responsible for vaginal infection known as Candidiasis.

Signs of toilet disease:

  1. Lower abdominal pains,
  2. Painful urination,
  3. Itching around the genitals,
  4. Coloured/milky repulsive vaginal discharges,
  5. Pain during sex,
  6. Sore or bumps around the vagina,
  7. Vaginal redness,
  8. Burning sensations.

There are other causes of LAP. I will talk about them is subsequent articles.
