Daniel Chukwuemeka Okwum. Uncle Scan.
In 21st century African families, baby making is no longer a business as usual. Things are slowly falling apart as we are now drifting away from the days of yore when we cherished birthing lots of children just to help us on farms, like the famous Okonkwo in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart who had ten children from three wives. Africans, in a way, have started imbibing the practices of western cultures, among other things, in having fewer kids. As I write, there are yet cultures and religious believes in Nigeria and in Africa that tend to prohibit this system.
Rather, they preach the gospel of “as much as God gives, we accept.” Whichever path you choose to tread, you as a couple should be able to provide quality lifestyle for the children you bring into this world.
In western climes, each couple only endeavours to replace themselves. Darwinism may also be a rationale behind their choice, whereas in Africa, most of the time it is poverty. According to a World Bank report in 2018, the giant of Africa, Nigeria with the largest economy, has more than half of her population living below poverty line of $2 per day. Sometimes, while attending to patients, some of them would say that: “I wouldn’t give birth to kids if I can’t give them the best of education –the fewer the better” This point is clearly understood. For some persons, it isn’t poverty; they are simply not ready to devote so much time raising children and spend less in ministry. Other reasons for having fewer kids may also abound.
Many families who projected having five kids have in error given birth to seven or more, while others needed just three but ended up having four. Many women got pregnant again when the last child is barely three months old. These are unsavory experiences which can subject the entire family to undue stress physically, emotionally, psychologically, economically and otherwise. Some couples who get unwanted pregnancies try to avoid these by doing an abortion. Abortion does not only annoy God, it has short and long term effects on the uterus, one of which is a weak cervix (for hyperlink). Please avoid it at all cost.
In the light of this, there is need for effective family planning methods which are readily available. Working with your gynecologist, you can make your choice with respect to what works for you. Family planning methods have now made it relatively easy for you not only to cut your coat according to you cloth, but also at the time you want it cut, through various techniques. Though, there may be few side effects and failures of some of the techniques; the gains supersede the pains in adopting them.
In summary, the following are advantages of family planning:
1. It enables you to regain your health fully after child birth
2. It provides enough time to care and love your family
3. It prevents lack in your family
4. Reduces stress in the family e.g. economic, psychological, emotional, etc.
5. When having illness, it allows you to recover
6. It helps you to add value to your life through education.
7. It allows for proper financial management and programming.
Family planning techniques are all around us. Do not subscribe to abortion that lacks medical backing, instead subscribe to these techniques. The main cause of some unwanted pregnancies among couples is procrastination. Do not keep thinking you can always do it tomorrow; there is a tomorrow when you practically can’t. Go do it now, you will be proud you did.
In case you are asking, “what are the available techniques and how do I determine which of them is suitable for me” you can read 10 methods of family planning and side effects” (for hyperlink)?
