Can I Get Pregnant While Breast Feeding My Baby?

Daniel Chukwuemeka Okwum. Uncle-scan.

Breastfeeding is the art of administering nutrition to your baby with the milk from your breasts. It is an age long practice that is almost as old as man himself. All mammals breast feed their off-springs, if there is any exemption, I’m not aware of it.

But I am aware that if some mammals, like the lamb, do not get the colostrums (first set of breast milk after delivery), it wouldn’t survive. Though your baby wouldn’t die if he is not breast fed (while you feed with other artificial foods), it is not the best choice to make.

You are therefore advised to start breast feeding your baby as soon as possible after birth, except otherwise advised by your pediatrician on some medical grounds. Your baby really needs the breast milk for a wholesome development: physically, mentally and otherwise.

Composition of the breast milk
The breast milk is rich in water, protein, fat, sugar and vitamins in appropriate proportions to provide your baby immunity, among other benefits. It contains about 85% water which is capable of relieving your baby of thirst, maintain an excellent level of hydration, control your baby’s body temperature, ease the joints, ensure proper functioning of the body organs like the kidneys etc.

The colostrums
The colostrums refer to the first set of breast milk in your breast in the first few days after giving birth. It is the richest portion every baby must consume and the first natural gift every woman must give to her baby before the blessing of dedication.

Natural Family planning
Exclusive breastfeeding is a natural means of family planning. Aside the general development of your baby, breastfeeding can be used as a method of family planning, especially when it is exclusively done. The use of exclusive breastfeeding as a family planning is known as Lactation Amenorrhea – the prevention of menstrual cycle through exclusive breastfeeding.

This is only possible if
- your periodic cycle did not return after giving birth,
- you breast feed your baby regularly, on demand, with only breast milk (no food, no water),
-:your baby is not more than six (6) months old.

These are important conditions you must satisfy if you intend to use breast feeding as a family planning technique.

Studies have shown that this method is more than 95% reliable. It is therefore advisable that if you do not fulfill the above stated conditions, and you do not want to get pregnant any soon, consult your gynecologist for an alternative family planning method. This is a safe practice in medicine.

This is how it works
Exclusive breastfeeding naturally suspends the effects of hormones responsible for ovulation. Without ovulation no egg is released and no fertilization can occur, and so, no pregnancy can occur.

It does justice to your baby’s brain.
I want to indicate my full support for the Exclusive Breastfeeding Campaign. Not just because it keeps you from getting pregnant during that six months, but because it does justice to your baby’s brain.

With Exclusive Breastfeeding, you are good to go! If you are still scared of getting pregnant, use your CD plate or consult your gynecologist for an alternative technique that would suit you.
