Drug abuse is the compulsive, excessive and self-damaging use of habit forming substances leading to addiction, dependence, serious physiological injury, and/or psychological injury. It could also be said to be the recurrent use of illegal drugs or over the counter mediation with negative consequences.
Abuse of drugs is characterized with the repeated use of a substance in ways that would be considered physically harmful. However there is a similar term called drug misuse which is often mentioned when talking about substance use or abuse.
Drug misuse refers to the use of a substance for a purpose that is not consistent with legal or medical guidelines. It is important for you to get used to this term as you proceed. Though a thin line exist between Drug abuse and Drug misuse but oftentimes the two can be used interchangeably.
Drug abuse is a major public health problem all over the world. The use and abuse of drugs by adolescents (male and females) has become one of the most disturbing health related phenomena in Nigeria and in other parts of the world.
It is generally believed that drug abuse is more associated with the male gender but recent studies has shown that female has the same propensity to abuse/ misuse drugs like the males. For example there has been an upsurge in the rate at which women (especially adolescents) abuse/misuse contraceptives. The Pharmaceutical companies that produce these drugs now smile to the bank.
Studies have also shown that women tend to increase their rate of consumption of certain drug of abuse compared to the male and also that once addicted to drugs a woman can find it more difficult to quit than men do.
The dangers associated with drugs abuse are numerous (the list being inexhaustible). However these dangers depends on the kind of drugs used, the length of use and many other factors. One thing many of these dangers have in common is that they affect not only the user but also have negative consequence/impact on those around them.
In order to reduce the incidence of drug abuse/misuse among women in our society, the following are questions every woman must ask:
1. WHY?: Why am I taking this drug?
2. HOW?: How am I to take this dug?
3. WHAT?: What should I take this drug with?
4. WHEN?: When should I take this drug?
5. WHICH?:Which of these drugs should I take first?
The appropriate answer to each of these questions can only be provided by your Physician/Pharmacist.
So, always consult your Physician for the correct prescription, and if you please, ask him/her the above questions while you listen to get a reasonable response.
